Foreword: On Dec. 27, 2008, Israel had launched a military attack on the Gaza Strip codenamed “Operation Cast Lead”. During the attack, 1330 Palestinians were killed - among them over 430 children – and 5450 wounded according to Palestinian medical services. On the Israeli side, 10 soldiers and 3 civilians were killed, according to official statistics. Since Israel had declared an embargo on press coverage in Gaza, this war had been covered mainly by Israel and from an Israeli standpoint…
Director Nicolas Wadimoff arrived in Gaza one month after the end of the attack, in February 2009. Among the rubble and the ruins, he met “errant souls”, people who “tried to put their life back together with little pieces of furniture or trinkets they found here and there…and I knew that my film would attempt to capture this impression on film”.
“Aisheen” [Still Alive in Gaza] does not indulge in self-pity; there is no political or humanitarian analysis. Instead, it offers poignant scenes of every day life ‘after the nightmare’ that speak louder than any commentary. The film captures a feeling of expectation… Everyone seems to waiting for something, for a better future for those inside the biggest prison in the world?
AISHEEN is a tribute to life – against all odds.
