DIAMONDS OF RECONCILIATION

The Richtersveld, a region situated along South Africa’s Atlantic coast, just a few kilometres from the Namibian border, is an area rich in diamonds. Several mines have been established on the territory belonging to black Africans and the coloured people from Bosluys who had been forced to leave and settle in the arid mountains almost a hundred kilometres from the coast. This region supplies an important part of the region’s wealth.

For over 80 years, the Alexkor mine has been producing diamonds of exceptional quality. With a monthly turnover of 100 million Euros. Since the end of Apartheid, those who have been deprived of their rights, have undertaken to regain possession of their land and its diamond mines. A hard battle : mining exploitation is becoming more difficult, the diamond veins are showing signs of depletion, beautiful stones become rare. The prospectors are also searching the sea for diamonds, but it’s an expensive and risky exploitation.
The Richtersvelders hope to regain possession of the mines before resources are depleted, but until today, the legal decision confirming their rights has still not been enforced. To this day, they are still waiting for a court decision confirming their rights and the diamond exploitation is still in the hands of white prospectors…
