BUS STOP: THE MESSENGER OF GORGAN
people & places

After the trip through South America in the first film of the collection, we shall now board a bus in Tehran for a 500km and 12-hour trip to Gorgan, the capital of the province of Golestan in north eastern Iran.
It is a voyage through ancient legends and harsh realities, a trip through past and present, at the crossroad of the steppes of the north east and the wooded Alborz mountain range with the famous Mount Damavand, a dormant volcano and the highest peak in Iran. Mount Damavand holds a special place in the Persian mythology and folklore.
700 years ago, Marco Polo traveled along the same routes as the modern-day passengers we meet on board our regular bus : Anaba, a Turkmen horse breeder, Reza the fisherman, Hussein who is a calligraphist and, of course, Ali, our bus driver.
We are passing through the landscapes of ancient Persia, a meeting place – then and now – of many different cultures. The bus route follows the traces of the Silk Road, winding its way between the steppes of central Asia and the Dasht-e Kavir desert – also known as Kavir-e Namak or Great Salt Desert. On just a few hundred kilometres, we’re being offered a trip into a mysterious past as well as a voyage through majestic landscapes – the Damavand mountain, the green plains along the Caspian sea, the little-known Kordkuy valley…
